What steps is your company taking to ensure that mesothelioma asbestos exposure is not occurring in the work place? For many going to work on a daily basis the last thing they consider is the danger they may be putting themselves and their family in.
Recently 31 states recognize that cancer development in firefighters is likely due to conditions the firefighters were exposed to on the job. In the states that recognize cancer as an occupational illness, firefighters may collect workers' compensation to aid in healthcare expenses and assist with wage reimbursement. What happened to the other 29 states? Why is this not recognized by all states?
One such reason may be the length of time it takes to develop the symptoms. One such cancer is Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a toxic mineral. The danger of mesothelioma really lies in the fact that many times it's not diagnosed for years since the symptoms take years to manifest themselves. (20-30 years)
Another industry afflicted by high rates of mesothelioma asbestos exposure is the automotive industry. Recently there have been many cases in the United Kingdom dealing with asbestos related disease. The automotive industry has used asbestos in products for decades, including brake pads and linings, clutch facings, valves and gaskets. Vehicles manufactured today are still built with asbestos brakes and clutches, just in smaller quantities than older parts.
The problem lies in the microscopic asbestos fibers that have the potential to remain in the air for a long period of time. The long duration of airborne asbestos fibers is potentially lethal in that workers could inhale the toxic particles even several days afterward the initial exposure.
These fibers can be caried on the clothing home and not only affect the person that was directly exposed but also there families. This then becomes currious for those that have never directly been exposed to asbestos as the symptoms of the disease of mesothelioma set in years later.
